Rammed Earth

Ancient constuction technique

Rammed earth is a traditional construction technique that involves compacting raw earth in successive layers within a formwork. Present for millennia in various civilizations, this pragmatic method relies on the use of on site materials.

A true regional heritage, this technique is being reinvented as an ecological and sustainable alternative to modern materials such as concrete, particularly for the construction of load-bearing structures.

Excellent thermal and acoustic insulating performance

With a large phase shift, rammed earth regulates the interior temperature, keeping it cool in summer and warmer in winter.

Due to its very high density, rammed earth is a very good acoustic insulator, creating a calm and comfortable habitat.

Environmental respect

Clay is a local and natural material that requires little energy to process. Its production emits little CO2, making it a leading eco-friendly choice.

Humidity management

Rammed earth is a breathable material, which naturally regulates humidity. It allows moisture in the air to escape, reducing the chance of mold buildup and ensuring a healthy indoor climate.

Natural aesthetic

Rammed earth offers a raw and warm appearance that can be left as is or covered with a finishing coat to add touches of color - or a lighter tone.
It blends perfectly with other natural materials such as wood and stone, creating harmonious and aesthetic spaces.

Valorisation of onsite materials

The soil used can come directly from the construction site.

It can also come from a quarry in close proximity where it is usually considered waste, thus minimizing the carbon footprint of this technique.

In regions where the earth is not compatible with this technique the mix can be formulated or a compacted concrete could be used with onsite aggregates.

Prefab or on site

The system designed and developed by TCND is modular:

We can produce blocks in our warehouse and then deliver and assemble the blocks on site.
We can set up our production directly on site and assemble the work as we go.

The choice will depend on the space available on site and the location of the deposit of earth.

RENOVATION

The fight against the abuse of historic earth buildings

Earth construction heritage is very important in France, particularly in our beautiful Rhône-Alpes region.
Many people buy rammed earth buildings and start work without knowing the material.

Without asking important questions and often accompanied by "professionals", many embark on renovations that can lead to real disasters: cement coatings, plasterboard and rock wool, polystyrene and concrete slabs...

These conventional techniques, far from being traditional, must be banned when we begin the renovation of an earthen building.
