Rammed Earth - from the Ice

From a geological point of view, rammed earth can be described as "ice land".

Indeed, wherever glaciers have advanced and retreated over the ages, we find rammed earth.

This phenomenon results from the alteration of feldspars present in the parent rock under the effect of glaciations, leading to the formation of the clays that we know today.

As glaciers melted and rivers formed, these clays mixed and reworked with gravels and sands, giving rise to rammed earth. This is why this material is mainly found in old river meanders and on moraines.

glacial, forming very distinct geological strata:

  • Topsoil

  • Rammed earth

  • Sandy gravel with many pebbles
